MDMA

Also known as: Molly, ecstasy

The world becomes trustworthy. Everyone you love, you love more.

A rising warmth. Jaw tension. Music gains a body.

Peak

Empathy floods. Touch feels different. Time is generous.

Comedown

Serotonin depletion for days. Low mood mid-week is common ('Tuesday blues').

What to know

The science, plainly.

What it does

MDMA releases serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine, producing warmth, empathy, and mild stimulation. Effects last 3–5 hours. Currently in FDA-track clinical trials for PTSD.

Safer-use principles

  • Test what you have. 'Molly' is one of the most-adulterated substances in the illicit supply — often contains cathinones, meth, or fentanyl.
  • Overheating and hyponatremia (drinking too much water) are the main risks at dance events. Rest every hour. Sip water — don't chug.
  • Space experiences by at least 6–12 weeks. Frequent use damages serotonin systems.
  • History of heart disease, uncontrolled hypertension, or serotonin-affecting medication (SSRIs, MAOIs) is a strong contraindication.

Dangerous combinations

MDMA + SSRIs or MAOIs risks serotonin syndrome. MDMA + stimulants adds cardiac and hyperthermia risk. MDMA + alcohol worsens dehydration.

If something goes wrong

High body temperature (>39°C), rigidity, confusion, seizures — call 911 and cool the person actively. Serotonin syndrome (fever, agitation, tremor, rigidity) is a medical emergency.
